As Samsung and Apple continue to battle for smartphone market share, Samsung has unveiled their latest flagship phone: the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. So how does it compare to Apple's latest offering, the iPhone 13 Pro Max? In this article, we'll take a look at their design, performance, camera quality, and battery life. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a Noteworthy display featuring a large and stunning 6.8-inch Quad HD+ Infinity-O Display covering the front of the phone with only a tiny hole punch cut-out at the top center for the selfie camera.  Samsung has gone with a glass back on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, giving it that premium look and feel.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max on the other hand comes with Apple's famous large Notch at the center of the top edge of its display housing the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a slightly smaller display at 6.7-inch. However, with a resolution of 2778×1284 pixels, its OLED Super Retina XDR display offers great detail. Apple has stuck with its all-glass design for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, giving it a sleek look and feel. 

Both smartphones have a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which is great for gaming and other fast-paced activities. Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max boasts of ProMotion, True Tone Display, and Wide Color support. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra on the other hand features Samsung's Dynamic AMOLED display technology along with Infinity-O Display and HDR+. Also, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has unreal brightness as it can go up to 1,750nits while the iPhone 13 Pro Max maxes out at 1,038nits. 

While the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is fast and accurate, the iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn't offer Touch ID, either in the display or embedded in the power button.

As an extra edge, the S22 Ultra is the first Galaxy S series phone to come with a built-in S Pen Stylus. The S Pen stylus offers an intuitive writing and drawing experience that is perfect for taking notes, sketching ideas, or just doodling. 

Both Samsung and Apple offer a range of color options for their new flagships. Samsung offers the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in Burgundy, Phantom Black, Phantom White, and Green Colours. Apple offers the iPhone 13 Pro Max in Graphite, Gold, Silver, and Sierra Blue colors.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has the edge in terms of design. Its large display, Infinity-O Display, and glass back all combine to give it a premium look and feel. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (229g) is also slightly lighter than the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max (238g), which makes it easier to handle. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also offers a larger display than Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, allowing you to enjoy more screen real estate. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by Samsung's latest and most powerful chipset, the Octa-Core Exynos 2200. It's also powered by Qualcomm's Octa-Core Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, depending on the market The iPhone 13 Pro Max on the other hand uses Apple's A15 Bionic chip— a Six-Core A15 (2 performance and 4 efficiency cores) Bionic 5nm chip with 64-bit architecture, 5‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, and an Apple Secure Enclave.

Galaxy S22 offers 8GB RAM with 128GB storage, 12GB RAM with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options. The Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max also offers 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options.  

The Galaxy S22 Ultra runs on  Samsung One UI 4.1 based on Android 12 and the company promises 5 years of update support and 4 years of major OS upgrades. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will get Android 13, 14, 15, and 16.  The Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max runs on iOS15 and is likely to get iOS16 and 17. 

While the Galaxy S22 Ultra boasts the brand-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, there's no denying the efficiency of the A15 Bionic Processor which manages to outperform the majority of smartphones out.

Both smartphones offer great performance with their respective chipsets and storage options, but with a multi-core score of 4,549 and a single-core score of 1,720, the iPhone13 Pro Max outperforms the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in both benchmarks. The quad-camera system consists of a 108MP rear camera with LED Flash, a 12MP 120° Ultra Wide sensor, a 10MP Telephoto lens for 3x zoom, and 10MP Periscope lens for 10x zoom, 100x Space Zoom, Laser autofocus, 4K at 60 fps, and 8K at 30fps. 

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, on the other hand, features a triple-camera set-up that includes the largest-ever sensor on an iPhone; a 12MP wide-angle with Sensor‑shift optical image stabilization, True Tone flash, HDR video recording with Dolby Vision, accompanied by a 12MP 120° Ultra-Wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom for a total 6x optical zoom range, and Night mode portraits enabled by LiDAR Scanner

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra's quad-camera setup outperforms Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max when it comes to photo-taking with features like faster autofocus speed, better low light performance, improved post-editing effects, and Samsung's Bright Night mode. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also offers a dedicated night mode that allows you to take great photos in low lighting conditions. 

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max blows the competition out of the park when it comes to recording videos as it offers more features like Dolby Vision, HDR recording, and a larger sensor. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also boasts of Samsung's Bright Night mode in videos but Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max offers better low light performance when it comes to video recording.

The Cinematic Mode on the iPhone 13 Pro Max steals the show with automatic focus adjustments that give you the feel of shooting a real movie. 

At the front, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 40MP camera while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 12MP TrueDepth camera.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers better camera features and details when taking pictures, but when it comes to video recording and cinematography, the iPhone13 Pro Max takes the lead with its Cinematic Mode, Dolby Vision support, and HDR recording. The Galaxy S22 Ultra also boasts a 40MP front camera. 

Battery Life 

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra packs an impressive 5000mAh battery whereas Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max boasts of a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 12 hours and 16 minutes of battery life. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also supports 45W wired fast charging, 15W Qi wireless charging, and Wireless PowerShare whereas Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with 15W MagSafe wireless charging and 20W wired fast charging support which can charge the phone up to 50% in 30 minutes. 

A downside to the Galaxy S22 Ultra is that it doesn't come with a charger included in the box while the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, but no adapter.  

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max boasts of impressive battery life but Samsung's new flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers all this while being packed with a 5000mAh battery. Additionally, the Galaxy S22 supports 45W fast charging which is much faster than the iPhone13 Pro Max's 20W fast charging. Samsung's Wireless PowerShare feature is another plus point for Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra as it allows you to use your phone as a power bank and charge other devices wirelessly, something the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max can't do.
